Listening inward

‘You’ve got a lot to finish up today, there is no time for a walk! Plus, it’s freezing outside!’

This was the narrative I was telling myself earlier this morning.

My body, on the other hand, had a different perspective:

‘I’m feeling very tired this morning. A swift 20-minute walk would be really what I most need right now, to pump up my energy level.’

Here’s what I did:

I listened to my body and went on a 20-minute walk. It was cold (0 degrees), but the best decision I’ve made.

I am sharing this, as I often encounter this mindset of:

‘I will start looking after myself (exercise, meditate, take regular breaks at work, take up a hobby, meet up with friends more regularly, …) WHEN I finish this project, finally get this promotion .. etc

The truth, however, is that we can get stuck in this vicious pattern of pushing ourselves too hard .. and watch our wellbeing slowly taking the knock.

When we become more aware of our ‘inner climate’, we can notice our mind’s narrative more clearly, and not necessarily act upon it.

After all, our brains have evolved to keep us safe, not healthy or happy. So, when your mind tries to convince you NOT to take that much needed break (or walk, in my case), SMILE (it helps, to take it lightly 😊) as you’ve managed to recognise this, then REFLECT on the following guiding questions:

🌿What thoughts am I telling myself?
🌿How is my body feeling right now?
🌿How is my emotional state?

💡 What am I really needing right now?

I have certainly learnt that when I am more responsive to my present moment needs, I not only feel better but I get more things done.
